I spent yesterday trying to talk myself into
charging less.
The logic felt caring: not everyone starting a
business has R2,500 spare. Drop it to R1,500,
test the market, get some clients in, raise it
later.
Then I looked at what I'd actually be doing.
I already have a R950 option for people who can't
or won't spend R2,500. If I drop the main session
to R1,500, the gap between them collapses and the
cheaper one stops making any sense. I'd be solving
the same problem twice and making both offers
weaker.
And there's a harder thing underneath it: I had no
evidence the price was too high. Nobody had told
me no. I was pre-emptively flinching on behalf of
a client who doesn't exist yet.
Price stayed at R2,500. If someone's genuinely
stretched, they can split it over two payments.
That helps the actual person in front of me
without pretending my work is worth less than it is.
Lowering your price to avoid a conversation you
haven't had yet isn't kindness. It's fear wearing
a nicer jacket.
